During our 1/21/12 meeting, we decided what the club needed was a few annual club-only competitions. We’re going to do a “lower gravity beer” competition in July [EDIT: COMPETITION AND BBQ ARE NOW SATURDAY JUNE 30th 2012] and a “high gravity beer” competition in December each year. Though we didn’t talk in detail about the December competition, we agreed up on the basic rules for the summer competition:
- This is a members-only event, though immediate family are welcome.
- Your beer must be below 6% ABV.
- One entry per club member, no exceptions.
- You must have six (6) 12 oz. indistinguishable brown, capped bottles to enter. Bottle requirements will be more strict than the NHC requirements due to the small scale of this competition (so as to maintain anonymity):
Bottle Requirements – Bottles must contain a minimum of 10 oz and must fit in a standard case box slot. The measurements of a standard case box slot are 2.75 inches L x 2.75 in W x 9 in H (7 cm x 7 cm x 22.9 cm). Bottles must be brown in color and free of ink, paint, or paper labeling. Obliterate any lettering or graphics on the cap with a permanent black marker. Bottles with Grölsch-type swing tops, corked bottles and 22 oz Bomber bottles are not allowed. Basically, use the normal 12 oz. bottles you buy at Northern Brewer or Midwest please. Consider this fair warning right now (1/22/12) before you bottle. - The beer you enter must have been brewed in 2012. Scout’s honor.
We’ll assign someone / someone will volunteer to steward the competition.[EDIT: Communications VP Grant will be stewarding the competition]. Those who have completed the entry form by Sunday 6/24 will submit their entry to Grant when they arrive at the BBQ.- The competition will be held during our members-only BBQ on the third Saturday of
July, 7/21/12. [EDIT: COMPETITION AND BBQ ARE NOW SATURDAY JUNE 30th 2012] Location will be at Nate G’s place in Northeast and time is 4:00pm - All members are encouraged to help judge. We’ll do a voting box.
- 1st PLACE: If we ever get to brew as a club at a local brewery, the winning recipe will be the one we brew. 2nd and 3rd place may just get bragging rights. We’ll see where we’re at with funds come June.
The club will take care of delicious foodstuffs et al. No need to bring anything but the six indistinguishable bottles of beer you’re entering if you are competing. Here’s your membership dues hard at work! You can bring some food to share if you want, but definitely not required. Don’t be stupid, bring cab fare or arrange for a DD. You’re going to have a good time.
Is there any category distinction between AG and extract? Or doesn’t that matter?
I’m going to say it doesn’t matter. Competitions don’t generally make a distinction so we shouldn’t either. After all, it’s all about the merits of the end product!
Good enough for me!
I’ve got dibs on the location.
You’re hosting Nate? Awesome thanks!
Woot
Aww yea Im gonna host.
Do we want to limit this to one entry per person? Granted the beers are <6%, but it could still get sloppy fast.
