The July meeting was a blast. We served a bunch of beers from our barrel projects and talked about NHC, the barrels and whats coming up. The barrels were again the star of the meeting and we will be for at least the next two months. Read more to find out why!
June Recap
June was an incredibility busy month for the NBA, from the NHC, Posters and Pints to our Club BBQ and the Farmers Market.
NHC
Check out the NHC post here: https://www.nordeastbrewersalliance.org/2014/06/12/nhc-trip/
Posters and Pints
We served soda at this June 21st event put on by club member Nate O’Brien. This Art and Beer fest featured local artists and local breweries at the Upper Cut Gym in Minneapolis.
Club BBQ
The Club BBQ is our summer member appreciation party where we invite members and their families to come together to share beer, food and just have a fun time. We were serving five of our barrel project beers and we also held a small beer, under 6%, competition. Congrats to Chad O. and Andy R.
Farmers Market
Thanks to all the members who helped out at the Farmers Market. As always it was a lot of fun. We had originally planned to attend every Saturday in June, but were rained out twice. As a result we will be attending the 9th and the 16th of August. If you would like to get involved to serve soda, brew a beer or just hang out, contact the club, or just show up!
New Business
Tasting Glasses
We have partnered with Married To My Beer to offer high quality tasting glasses. These glasses are co-branded with the MTMB logo on one side and the NBA logo on the other. The glasses are $2 ea or a great volume discount of 4 for $5. Selling these quickly allows us to move on to our next merch item. So pick up a set at the next meeting or the Farmers Market!
T Shirts
We also have NBA Shirts for sale. They are slate with the NBA art in white block letters with our logo and motto on the back. Prices are $15 for S-XL and $17 for 2XL-3XL. They are available at the monthly meetings and at the Farmers Market.
Elections
This winter is an important election for the club. Our executive positions have two year terms with Finance and Tech/Comm alternating with the other three. In January we will be voting for President, Vice President and Director of Operations. Nathan and Nick will not being running again so we will see some new blood in these leadership roles. Nominations will be heard in November with voting in January.
2014 Omnibus Liquor Bill
The 2014 Omnibus Liquor Bill has a number of homebrew related items. The biggest being that homebrew can be brought out of the home for organized affairs, exhibitions, or competitions. This allows us to legally bring our beer to our meetings. One of the requirements is that beer has to be labeled with the brewer’s name and address. We will have labels at the meetings to be used if you have not labeled your beer before you arrive. Please use them to be compliant.
Non-Profit Status
At the July BAMF meeting the executive committee voted to change from a 501c7 Social Club to a 501c3 Educational Organization. This designation has two large benefits; 1. Donations to our club would be tax deductible and 2. We can hold events, like a beer dinner or a homebrew fest!
Big River Homebrew Competition 2014
Its nearly time for the Big River Homebrew Competition. This is our annual AHA sanctioned homebrew competition featuring sour and funky beers. We are working with Nordeast Brewers for local sponsoring. Be sure to join us for the judging days, its incredibly fun and a great way to learn from some of the best judges.
Experiments
Yeast Experiment
The final results for the Yeast Experiment have been a long time coming. With our busy spring and summer the data collection and processing took a back seat to more active projects. We will have the final data ready to present at the August Meeting as well as posted to the site.
Single Specialty Malt Experiment
The Single Specialty Malt Experiment is the first in our Mini Experiment project. 10 members signed up to brew the same beer with different specialty malt. The resulting beer will be tasted at the August meeting. The base beer is an American Pale Ale. The specialty malts are:
- Biscuit
- Victory
- Rye Malt (Briess)
- Golden Naked Oats
- Nocturnal Select Grain Blend
- Special Roast (Briess)
- English Chocolate Malt
- Franco-Belges Kiln Coffee
- Caramel 90
- Special B
Single Hop
The 2014 Single Hop Experiment has been moved back to September to allow a partnership with Day Block Brewing. Day Block will be producing at least 5 barrels of wort for us to brew our beer with. Each person will have to pay for their portion of malt, but we will be purchasing malt in bulk and Northern Brewer will be providing yeast so the cost of this beer should be very low. The beer will be brewed in September and tasted in November. Specific dates and times are TBD. We will also have the opportunity to boil in the parking lot behind Day Block, which should be a lot of fun.
Barrels – Its Time!
Its time to empty and fill three barrels!
-HOBO 1.1
-Barrel #3 2.0 Flanders
-Barrel #1 2.1 Barley Wine
HOBO will be refilled with the same delicious beer, our Sour Belgian Blonde.
Barrel #3 2.0 will be refilled with the same Flanders recipe.
Barrel #1 2.1 will be refilled with a Porter.
