The August monthly meeting was a great success, thanks to everybody that came out. It was nice to see first timers, old timers and everyone between. We love growing the club and sharing our collective knowledge. Did you miss the meeting or just want to review? Read More:
Monthly Recap
Farmers Market
We finished our stint at the Nordeast Farmers Market with a strong showing. We brewed 10 gals of Brown Ale to be served at the Harvest Gala and the Big River Brew Fest. We also served two sodas made by Tyler, a strawberry ginger and a chocolate mint. We raked in over $70 from donations and new members. Thanks to everybody who helped make the farmers market a success for us again this year. See you next year @NEFarmersmarket!
New Business
Tasting Glasses
We have partnered with Married To My Beer to offer high quality tasting glasses. These glasses are co-branded with the MTMB logo on one side and the NBA logo on the other. The glasses are $2 ea or a great volume discount of 4 for $5. Selling these quickly allows us to move on to our next merch item. So pick up a set at the next meeting.
T Shirts
We also have NBA Shirts for sale. They are slate with the NBA art in white block letters with our logo and motto on the back. Prices are $15 for S-XL and $17 for 2XL-3XL. They are available at the monthly meetings .
Elections
January 2015 is an important election for the club. Our executive positions have two year terms with Finance and Tech/Comm alternating with the other three. In January we will be voting for President, Vice President and Director of Operations. Nathan and Nick will not being running again so we will see some new blood in these leadership roles. Nominations will be heard in November with voting in January at the winter party.
Harvest Gala
Each year the Northeast Farmers Market puts on a fundraising event call the Harvest Gala. The last two years we have provided beverages that can be purchased at the event. Proceeds go to the Northeast Farmers Market. This year we will be serving beer. If you would like to have your beer served let one of the officers know.
Big River Brew Fest
For the fourth year in a row the ESNS is putting on the Big River Brew Fest. This is certainly our favorite beer event with its local connections, very reasonable price and this year we will be serving beer! We will also be providing beer for the brat boil, so we need lots of beer! if you can help out fill out this spreadsheet: Big River Brew Fest Sign Up
Big River Homebrew Competition
The 3rd annual Nordeast Big River Hombrew Competition is almost upon us. We are again providing custom categories for 100% Brett and American Wild beers. So bottle up that sour and funk and enter it into one of the best places to get your wild beer judged! Also we need volunteers to help with facilitating the competition. Sign up at the competition website. Its a fun time and a great educational experience, you also earn points towards a BJCP rank. http://nordeasthbc.brewcompetition.com/
Barrel Project
We are approaching another epic day of beer moving when we empty barrels #1 and #3 from project 2.0. That means 220 gallons of beer moving around in organized chaos. The exact date is TBD, but it will be in the month of November. So, if you have signed up for the Flanders or the Historical Porter that are going back in, get to brewing!
In an only slightly less epic day, but equally awesome, we will be emptying and refilling the HOBO barrel in November as well. Exact date is also TBD.
We will have the dates for both finalized at the September meeting.
Experiments
Single Hop
The 2014 Single Hop Experiment is quickly approaching. Day Block will be producing 6 barrels of wort for us to brew our beer with. Each person will have to pay for their portion of malt, but we will be purchasing malt in bulk and yeast will probably be provided. The cost per 5 gallon batch should be around $8, which will get you 5.5 gallons of wort and a packet of us-05. The wort will be produced on September 20th at around noon. We also have the opportunity to boil in the back parking lot, which is always a blast. Sign up here to get involved!
Education
Single Specialty Malt Experiment
The Single Specialty Malt Experiment is the first in our Mini Experiment project. 10 members signed up to brew the same beer with different specialty malt. The resulting beer was tasted at the August meeting. The base beer was an American Pale Ale. The specialty malts were:
- Biscuit
- Victory
- Rye Malt (Briess)
- Golden Naked Oats
- Nocturnal Select Grain Blend
- Special Roast (Briess)
- English Chocolate Malt
- Franco-Belges Kiln Coffee
- Caramel 90
- Special B
This was an awesome Education/Experiment Topic. It really showed how a small amount of certain types of malts could strongly affect the final beer while at the same time show how subtle the difference could be between other malts. It also gave some people that chance to brew with and taste a specialty grain they have not used before. A very awesome Mini Experiment. A big thanks to the brewers and especially Tim S. and Steve M. for pulling it together.
Mini Experiments
If you would like to setup your own Mini Experiment let us know at the next meeting!
Suggest an Education Topic
If you would like to request an education topic please do. We have lots a members that know a great deal about brewing and we have awesome contacts in the home and commercial brewing scene. Let us know what you would like to learn!
Thanks!
Thanks for reading and we hope to see you at the next meeting as well as the Single Hop brew day!
