The NBA had another eventful month with the meeting, planning for the competition, the single hop brew day and more.
Meeting Recap
Thanks to everybody that came out to the meeting at ESNS. We are in a really great place as the club with our active and growing membership, experiments, projects and the awesome space we have to meet in.
We have to give a huge and continuing thanks to the East Side Neighborhood Services for letting us use the space for out meetings as well as the competition judging and other events. Please support the ESNS when you have the opportunity. A great way to do that would be to attend the Big River Brew Fest on Oct 18th!
Single Hop
On Saturday the 20th we brewed our Single Hop Experiment with the help of Day Block Brewing. Day Block mashed the wort for us and 30+ brewers boiled their wort with their selected hop. We will be tasting these beers in November, exact dates TBD.
Big River Homebrew Competition
The competition is in full swing. The entry window is closed and we are moving to the meaty part of the process. We will be organizing the entries the weekend of the 4th and the Judging will take place the 11th and 12th. If you signed up to Judge or Steward thank you and we will see you then!
Harvest Gala
Each year the Northeast Farmers Market puts on a fundraising event call the Harvest Gala. The last two years we have provided beverages that can be purchased at the event. Proceeds go to the Northeast Farmers Market. This year we will be serving beer. If you would like to have your beer served let one of the officers know.
Big River Brew Fest
For the fourth year in a row the ESNS is putting on the Big River Brew Fest. This is certainly our favorite beer event with its local connections, very reasonable price and this year we will be serving beer! We will also be providing beer for the brat boil, so we need lots of beer! if you can help out fill out this spreadsheet: Big River Brew Fest Sign Up
Tickets are only $25 dollars and the proceeds go to the ESNS so we want to make sure the NBA has a good showing. If you are going it would be cool to wear your NBA shirt. If you don’t have one they will be available at the October meeting. Prices are $15 for S-XL and $17 for 2XL-3XL
Barrel Project
The recipes have been crafted, the sign up is full, the dates have been set, all that is left is to brew the beer. So brew that beer and we will see you in November.
- Nov 8 – HOBO and Koval
- Nov 22 – Project 2.0 #1 and #3
Update on Project 2.0 Barrel #4
Barrel #4, currently housing the Belgian Quad, has developed a culture of Pediococcus. Pediococcus is a bacteria that produces lactic acid(Sour), diacetyl(Butter) and extracellular polysaccharides(Ropiness). It is found in Lambic and other sour/wild ale. What this means is that barrel #4 is now a sour barrel.
So is the beer in the barrel salvageable? Yes! We will be adding brett, which will clean up the diacetyl and the extracellular polysaccharides. Once that process is finished we will again evaluate the beer to determine next steps, so watch for updates on this beer. Whats next into the barrel? Lost Abbey Cable Car anyone?…
Thanks for reading and we hope to see you are the next meeting and the Big River Brew Fest!
