The Nordeast Brewers Alliance, in coordination with Eastside Neighborhood Services and their Big River Brewfest, are proud to put on the 4th annual Nordeast Big River Homebrew Competition.
Our AHA/BJCP sanctioned homebrew competition is in its 4th year and is planned to be bigger than ever. A lower entry free, twice as many drop off locations and a lot of advertising will mean more participants and more beer. Not to mention nationally recognized BJCP judges and a great judging location provided by ESNS.
Check out the competition website for more information and get those beers brewed and packaged for Northeast Minneapolis’ premier homebrew competition.
March Meeting
This month the good folks at Midwest Supplies hosted our meeting, as EastSide Neighborhood Services has tax preparation services happening. We are really asking members to step up and host “brew with a member days” for new members or for friends of the club who might be interested in getting into home brewing. From the surveys taken at the February meeting, Minneapolis residents are interested in getting the water tested, and will be coordinated for those interested to pitch in and get water tested. Folks are interested in doing a swap meet, which we will combine with another event in the coming months.
2014 was a landmark year for the NBA, we attended our first NHC as a club, filled barrels 7 times and served beer to the general public for the first time at the Big River Brewfest and the Harvest Gala. Below are some of the highlights from 2014.
Here’s what’s on tap for the meeting this Thursday. Usual location and time: East Side Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd St NE, Minneapolis. 7:00-9:00pm.
Everyone is welcome, as is your homebrew. Please label it appropriately to comply with SF 2336 – Section 9.

The July meeting was a blast. We served a bunch of beers from our barrel projects and talked about NHC, the barrels and whats coming up. The barrels were again the star of the meeting and we will be for at least the next two months. Read more to find out why! Continue reading July 17th Meeting Notes→
The Nordeast Brewers Alliance will again be at the Northeast Farmers Market for every Saturday in June. Come check us out to talk about homebrew and try some hand crafted soda.
NBA members sign up to participate , we need people to brew, make soda and just hang out and talk beer. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to support the club and the local community.
Eight of the members of the Nordeast Brewers Barrel aging project came over to my place on Saturday and sampled the barrel and here are my thoughts on how it’s coming along. It tastes AMAZING and I couldn’t be happier with the direction it’s going. It feels really great to have so much time, consideration, and collaboration, all come together and turn into something amazing!
Tasting notes –
Appearance – completely still because it’s pulled from the barrel. Yellow color with a hint of brown that’s definitely a contribution of the oak.
Aroma -belgian esters, bready malt, tartness, and slight oak is evident.
Flavor – Starts out and hits you with a nice lactic tartness, the middle is slighty malty and the oak sneaks up on you after a few sips. It’s hard to pull it out, but the oak is definitely starting to come through. The finish is dry, yet it has an interesting sweetness that hits you at the very end of the sip. Gravity is at 1.002 so we feel that the sweetness is most likely coming from the sugars in the wood either from the oak itself, or from the Honeywine that previously was in the oak, or both. Mouth waters and brings you back for more!
Mouthfeel – Tart, thin – medium body
Overall – Damn…this is a fucking fantastic beer already! We are planning on letting it sit for another 3 months to get some additional brett characteristics going, and to let it become more intensely sour.
